GROUND “GOOD” FOR VODAFONE DERBY

Andrew Cooper, Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs, is leaving the going description for Vodafone Derby Day as GOOD and will not be watering the course.

He said: “I have left the ground description as good and I’m not going to water. The rail will be pushed back as planned and we’ll review the going description in the morning.

“Weather-wise, you wouldn’t rule out a shower here this evening and, equally, there might be some drizzly rain around tomorrow morning.

“I think everyone was happy with the state of the going today and I’d be very happy to call it good ground.”

CROWD OF 19,000

A crowd of 19,000 was in attendance at Epsom Downs today, Ladies Day, despite the 3,000 reduced capacity in the grandstand as a result of the current redevelopment.

Nick Blofeld, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: “We are delighted that the crowd has held up so well during the redevelopment phase and it is very satisfying to witness the continued popularity of Ladies Day.

“We have seen some fantastic racing today and there has been a terrific atmosphere around the racecourse as anticipation builds ahead of tomorrow’s Vodafone Derby.”
