Epsom Downs houses the third largest racehorse training centre in the country. The facilities are managed by the Training Grounds Management Board and there are currently 12 trainers using the gallops. The resurgence of Epsom Downs as a training centre was one of the highlights of 2009.
Local trainers enjoyed one of their best year's on record, winning £1million in prize money and more than 160 races between them, 12 of them at their local track. The number of horses in training at Epsom Downs is also at the highest level for a decade, with 170 horses on average being trained on the Downs any given month.
In 1999 Epsom Racing Staff Welfare was established as a registered charity with a view to improving welfare and conditions for the racing staff in Epsom.
